Margate History
Have just completed a book that is to be published in November 09. This book contains a, verbatim, 20,000+word diary/journal of a chap who lived just yards away from JMW Turner and Mrs Booth in the 1820s-40s. This humorous, yet intelligent, account of Margate and its characters is wonderful, with great detail on local subjects such as Places, people (over 80 different local people mentioned), Ships/shipbuilding, hoodening, ghosts, smuggling, businesses, etc. The diarist also details places he visited like: The Tivoli Gardens, Assembly Rooms, The Libraries, Bathing Rooms, Bazaars, Pubs, The Theatre Royal, working for Mr John Boys the solicitor (1830s), and much much more. This has never been published in book form since the day it was written and will, no doubt, WoW! the local historian, genealogist and Turner buff. It is very rare for any detailed information of this sort to exist - especially of Margate nearly two hundred years ago. Watch this space.
